It is the first question almost everyone asks, and the honest answer is unsatisfying: it depends on the deal. Not because nobody will tell you, but because the number is an output of four or five other things, and none of them are known until someone looks at your file and your truck.
What we can do is show you the dials. If you know which way each one turns, you can usually tell in advance whether your deal sits at the easier or the harder end of the range.
Your credit profile
The strongest single dial. A clean, seasoned file with obligations paid as agreed opens more of the lender network, and more competition on your file generally means less cash up front. A thin or recently damaged file narrows the field, and the lenders still looking will usually want more of their exposure covered at signing.
How long the business has been running
Equipment financing expects an Inc. or LLC with at least two years of operating history. A business comfortably past that, with statements to match, is a different conversation from one that just crossed the line. Time in business and cash flow tend to move together in a lender’s read of the file.
The truck itself
- A newer unit with documented history is easier to value, and easier to sell if it ever has to be sold
- An older unit with high mileage carries more uncertainty, and uncertainty gets priced somewhere
- Specialised or unusual configurations have a thinner resale market than a standard sleeper or day cab
This is the dial most buyers can actually change. The same file on two different trucks can produce two different structures.
Where you are buying it
A dealer purchase arrives with an invoice, a clear title path and a seller who does this every day. A private-party purchase needs the seller verified, the title checked and any existing lien paid off, and the lender is funding into a transaction between two people rather than through a dealership. That difference shows up in the terms.
What you bring to the table
Cash is only one form of it. Trade equity in a unit you already own, a stronger guarantor, or a shorter term all give a lender the same comfort that a larger deposit gives, and any of them may be the easier lever to pull in your situation.
Why we will not quote you a figure blind
Because it would be a made-up number, and you would plan around it. We take one application to 40+ lender partners, decisions typically come back within 24 hours, and what comes back is a real structure for your file and your truck — including what the lender wants at signing.
Rates on equipment financing run from 8% to 13% based on qualifications and terms run from 36 to 72 months, so there is genuine room between the easy end and the hard end of that range. Knowing which end you are near is worth more than a number from a stranger.
