Every lender in the network asks the same question in a different order: if this truck stops earning, does the payment still get made? Everything on the checklist below is a way of answering it.
None of this is a secret, and none of it needs a hard credit pull to start. Semi truck financing opens with a soft pull only, so you can see where you stand before anything touches your score.
The business
For equipment financing the baseline is an Inc. or an LLC with at least two years of operating history. Lenders are looking for a real entity with a filing history, not a name registered last month for this purchase.
- Legal entity name exactly as registered, plus the EIN
- MC / DOT number if you run under your own authority
- How long the entity has actually been operating, not when the name was reserved
If the entity is newer than that, the conversation usually shifts. Freight factoring leans on your customer’s credit rather than your operating history, which is why a new authority can qualify there when equipment financing is still out of reach.
The owner
Personal credit still matters on an owner-operator deal, because the owner is usually the guarantor. What lenders read is the pattern, not a single number: how long the file has been open, whether obligations are paid as agreed, and whether anything recent looks like distress.
Rates on equipment financing run from 8% to 13% depending on those qualifications, and terms run from 36 to 72 months. Anyone who names your number before seeing the file is guessing.
The cash flow
Usually the most recent three months of business bank statements. Lenders read them for rhythm: does revenue arrive regularly, do balances survive a slow week, and are there existing daily or weekly payment obligations already pulling from the account. Two strong months and one empty one invites a question, so it helps to have the explanation ready rather than discovered.
The truck
The asset is collateral, so its identity and condition are part of the decision.
- Year, make, model and VIN, plus the invoice or bill of sale
- Mileage and service history where the seller has it
- An inspection or condition report, where the deal calls for one
- For a private-party purchase: title status and payoff details on any existing lien
Age and mileage are inputs here, not automatic refusals — used truck financing goes into how they change the structure rather than end the conversation.
What moves fastest
One application goes to 40+ lender partners, decisions typically come back within 24 hours of a complete file, and funding typically follows within 2–5 business days. The word doing the work in that sentence is “complete” — the folder in this list of documents is the difference between a day and a week.
Want to see where you stand? Walk through the process or check your options — soft credit pull only, no obligation.
